What design files do I need for Laser Cutting?

STEP file are the best file format to upload.
Laser Cutting

For laser cutting at Fabworks, we recommend providing your designs as 3D STEP files. STEP files are ideal because they maintain all dimensions and design features accurately, ensuring your parts are fabricated precisely as intended. While we can work with DXF files for simple 2D designs, STEP files offer several advantages:

  • They preserve 3D geometry, which is crucial for parts with bends or complex features.
  • They allow for easier configuration of hardware insertion, tapping, and other operations.
  • They streamline the quoting and manufacturing process, potentially reducing lead times.

When creating your design files, keep in mind:

Ensure your model is to scale and uses the correct units (preferably inches). For sheet metal parts, model them in their final bent state rather than as flat patterns. Include any holes or features needed for hardware, tapping, or other operations, but do not model thread geometry, or countersinks.

If you're unsure how to export your design as a STEP file, we offer guides for popular CAD software like Onshape and Fusion 360 on our blog. These guides provide step-by-step instructions to help you prepare your files correctly. For the smoothest experience, always double-check your design before uploading it to our instant quoting platform. If you have any questions about file preparation or need assistance, our support team is here to help.
